Position Paper Writing

Committee topics should be addressed in a succinct policy statement representing the relevant views of your assigned country, NGO, or expert role. You should identify and address international and regional conventions, treaties, declarations, resolutions, and programs of action that are relevant to the policy of your country or NGO. You should also include recommendations for action to be taken by your committee. A delegate’s role as a Member State, Observer State, or NGO should affect the way a position paper is written. To understand these differences, please refer to the Delegate Preparation Guide.

A position paper should be submitted for each assigned committee.

  • The two page position paper should cover all the topics in the Background Guide, not a separate paper for each topic.

  • NMUN position papers are not cited as is required for an academic paper. They are written as if they are a policy statement coming from the foreign ministry. Formal citations are not used.

Position papers must be entirely original. UN documentation is considered public domain, conferences and Moravian Academy do not allow the verbatim re-creation of these documents.

Helpful Guides/Resources

These guides come from a variety of universities and programs that offer some of the best suggestions and ideas to be an excellent delegate and get the most out of your MUN experiences.

These resources collected from the around the best UN and MUN resource pages around, can help you prepare to become a great delegate and, in turn, have an outstanding experience at our MUN conference(s).  The amount of work you put in prior to the conference is as important, if not more so, than the work you put in while at conference.  Knowing parliamentary procedures, you country information, and your position papers very well will allow you to focus on what is happening and how to interact during committee sessions and beyond, and will thereby make you a far better delegate than if you have to fumble through your notes.  Knowledge and its resulting confidence are key factors in being an excellent delegate.
